An Amish Thanksgiving Day

Celebrating Thanksgiving Day is a tradition looked forward to by many people in our country. Some celebrate it’s historical significance, while others simply see it as a day to eat gluttonous amounts of food. Today, many religions add a spiritual emphasis to their Thanksgiving celebrations. The Amish are no different. Although they love the feasting as much as anyone, they also honor the spiritual aspect of the day.

The Old Order Amish sect will observe Thanksgiving Day as a holy day. Generally, this holiday begins with a fast (skipping breakfast) for all church members, followed by a devotional time and some reflection on the blessings of the year. The family then either visits a friends’ or relatives’ house by invitation, or they host the feast at their own house and invite others to join them.

The Thanksgiving meal typically includes baked chicken, stuffing, mashed potatoes and gravy, homemade noodles, a variety of vegetables, homemade bread and jams, applesauce, pudding, mixed fruit, cake, and a variety of delicious pies.

Amish enjoy the pleasures of delicious foods as much as anyone, and no one seems to be able to escape the misery and consequences of their gluttonous day!

However, very little holiday and fall decorating is seen in most Amish homes. They commonly frown upon seasonal decorations and view it as worldly and an indication of a proud heart.

Some Amish families may recognize the historical aspect of Thanksgiving Day, while others simply don’t mention it and choose rather to focus solely on the aspect of giving thanks.
