5 Fun Facts About the Amish

Many people know what the Amish are like in a general sense. But what about the details of Amish life? Today, I’ve decided to share five very random facts about the Amish.

Five Fun Facts About the Amish

1. Very few Amish families live in one area all their life. Most families move numerous times from state to state or from one community to another for various reasons. Normally, it is because of disunity among the members or being disgruntled with the Ordnung (church rules). Rarely is it for economic reasons.

2. Although many Amish churches allow their people to have bicycles, many do not. Our community considered them much too modern.

3. Most Amish churches have an Ordnung letter, which is an established set of rules written by the Bishop and the preachers of that community. It describes in great detail what is allowed in the community — from the smallest details of measurements and colors in clothing to what type of buggies and farm machinery one may own. Basically, every aspect of an Amish person’s life is under the control of the church.

4. When Amish children are not given a middle name, the first letter of their father’s name becomes their middle initial. That identifies them with the family to which they belong. (see my post about Naming an Amish Baby)

5. The youngest son of the family is traditionally expected to take over the family farm after marriage or when the father comes to retirement age. At that time, the parents move into the dawdyhaus, and the son and his family occupy the bigger house.
