Amish Home Decor

Amish Home Decor

If you've never been inside an Amish home you're probably wondering if, or how, they decorate their homes.

You might be surprised to learn that the variations and extent of their home decor is about as diverse as their various groups of people. You would find that no two communities will follow the same guidelines.

Depending on where you visit, you'll find their homes to be very plain with nothing more than a calendar and a clock on the wall. Their furniture will be absolutely plain with minimal decor items set on dressers. They believe a beautiful decorated room is an indication of a vain and proud heart.

The Simple Amish Lifestyle

The Simple Amish Lifestyle

When we hurriedly rush by in our car on the way to work, we only get a glimpse of their beautiful, picture-perfect homesteads with cows and horses lazily grazing in the pastures. Small children are finding enjoyment on a tall swing under the tree in the front yard or building sand castles in the sandbox. The beautiful gardens, half the size of a field, are promising a bumper crop at harvest time. Neighbors are helping neighbors put up hay. The women are busy cooking and baking the most delicious meals you've ever eaten! What an ideal life they must have, you may say!

Wait! Not so fast! Before you get too green with envy, let's take a look "behind the curtain!" Yes, there is an invisible curtain which hides many realities of the admirable lifestyle and strong work ethic of the Amish.

An Amish Laundry Day

An Amish Laundry Day

Laundry day for the typical Amish women is not as simple as throwing in a load of laundry. We can simply dump in the detergent, push a few buttons, and walk away. Then we come back later at our convenience and throw it in the dryer. For the Amish woman, laundry is a very different process from our modern methods.

The once a week laundry day is no small task for the Amish ladies. At the beginning of the day, the water must be carried to a big black cast iron kettle and a fire is built under it to heat the water.
